lanthanumSoft, silvery, ductile and malleable, metallic element, atomic number 57, relative atomic mass 138.91, the first of the lanthanide series. It is used in making alloys. Fosrenol(R) is a non-aluminium, non calcium phosphate binder that has a very high affinity for dietary phosphate, forming lanthanum phosphate, which passes through the intestines and is eliminated from the body, leading to effective reduction in serum phosphorus levels. CPFilms' parent company, Solutia, has patents on IR-absorbing layers of lanthanum hexaboride, antimony-tin oxide, and indium-tin oxide. In the 1970s, experiments were conducted with "rare-earth" or green-emitting phosphors, including lanthanum and gadolinium. |
