Lares

Community in western Puerto Rico, 27 km/17 mi northeast of Mayagüez; population (1990) 5,600. A coffee-growing centre in the 19th century, it is now a summer resort.

It was the scene, on 23 September 1868, of the beginning of the nationalist uprising called the Grito de Lares (the ‘Shout of Lares’), a touchstone for supporters of Puerto Rican independence.
