mass action, law of

In chemistry, a law stating that at a given temperature the rate at which a chemical reaction takes place is proportional to the product of the active masses of the reactants. The active mass is taken to be the molar concentration of each reactant. The number of reactants whose concentrations thus influence the rate is the reaction order.
