galena

Mineral consisting of lead sulphide, PbS, the chief ore of lead. It is lead-grey in colour, has a high metallic lustre and breaks into cubes because of its perfect cubic cleavage. It may contain up to 1% silver, and so the ore is sometimes mined for both metals. Galena occurs mainly among limestone deposits in Australia, Mexico, Russia, Kazakhstan, the UK, and the USA.

Galena

Town and administrative headquarters of Jo Daviess County, northwest Illinois; population (1990) 3,600. It is situated on the Galena River, 5 km/3 mi east of the Mississippi River, 24 km/15 mi southeast of Dubuque, Iowa, and 14 km/9 mi south of Hazel Green, Wisconsin. Its lead sulphide and zinc deposits and its location midway between St Paul, Minnesota, and Rock Island, Illinois, made Galena a boom town; between 1840 and 1860 it was the wealthiest city in Illinois. The US Civil War general Ulysses S Grant was born here in 1822.
