The idea of Frenchness still evokes elitism, privilege, the diplomat class, savoir-faire and luxury--the gamine Gigi learning how to spot good emeralds while Maurice Chevalier warbles leeringly nearby. Gary Cole epitomizes the show's queasy sense of straddling two eras: At times, he appears to be channeling Greg Kinnear's leeringly clean-cut take on Bob Crane in the upcoming film ``Auto Focus,'' but it's also apparent early on that he's a genial pushover when it comes to kids. Lestat is so archly wicked and leeringly decadent that one yearns to see what Daniel Day-Lewis or John Malkovich would have done with him. |
