legwarmers

Long, knitted, footless socks worn from thigh to ankle, originally used by dancers to keep muscles warm. In the early 1970s, as keep-fit and disco dancing became fashionable, legwarmers were worn with bodysuits and leotards, and sometimes for everyday wear over tight-fitting jeans.
