leggings

Knitted protective leg covering, reaching from knee to ankle, worn by dancers; also, a waist-to-ankle figure-hugging fashion garment of the 1980s and 1990s encasing the legs in a stretch fabric, typically lycra. Worn mainly by women, leggings evolved from the sportswear of the 1970s fitness cult.
