River port in East Friesland, Lower Saxony, Germany, at the confluence of the rivers Ems and Leda, 175 km/108 mi northwest of Hannover; population (1995 est) 32,500. The port is part of a large pan-European port complex. It handles animal feed, construction materials, and agri-products. Industries include boatbuilding, food-processing, and the manufacture of textiles and animal feed.

There is an attractive harbour, and a 17th-century moated castle east of the town centre. The city's red-brick buildings are in the style of early baroque architecture of the Netherlands.
