Leone, Sergio (1929–1989)

Italian film director and screenwriter. One of the pioneers of the ‘spaghetti Western’, he was largely responsible for making a star of the actor Clint Eastwood, starting with Per un pugno di dollari/A Fistful of Dollars (1964).

Leone's visually stylish, operatic films, many of them scored by Ennio Morricone, include Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo/The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (1966), C'era una volta il West/Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), and C'era una volta il America/Once Upon a Time in America (1984).
