lime

White powdery substance used in making mortar and cement. It is made commercially by heating calcium carbonate (CaCO3), obtained from limestone or chalk, in a lime kiln. Quicklime readily absorbs water to become calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2, known as slaked lime, which is used to reduce soil acidity.

Sharp-tasting green or greenish-yellow citrus fruit of the small thorny lime bush, native to India. The white flowers are followed by the fruits, which resemble lemons but are more round in shape; they are rich in vitamin C. (Citrus aurantifolia, family Rutaceae.)

Any of a group of deciduous trees native to the northern hemisphere. The leaves are heart-shaped and coarsely toothed, and the flowers are cream-coloured and fragrant. (Genus Tilia, family Tiliaceae.)
