limes

Roman frontier system, with military road, ditch, fence or wall, and watchtowers, supported by forts. Such defences marked the empire's boundaries in Africa, Germany, and Syria.

In Britain, an earlier limes was succeeded by Hadrian's Wall. In southern Germany excavations have revealed a wall over 480 km/300 mi long which passed through Aalen, Bavaria, to link the Rhine and Danube frontiers.
