In this case, "field studies" is a term which applies equally to the environmental science component and the theology course, the former utilizing the expedition itinerary (forest and alpine ecology, limnology, island marine ecosystems) as a living laboratory in which the theoretical and empirical are experienced together; the latter likewise examines the conceptual in a concrete, experiential context.
