linden

Another name for the lime tree.

Linden

City in northeastern New Jersey, adjoining Elizabeth, and on the Rahway River; population (1990) 36,700. Highly industrialized, it has oil refineries (including the huge Bayway facility) and manufactures lorries, chemicals, machine tools, paint and varnish, pharmaceuticals, and alcoholic beverages.

In an area once filled with linden trees and purchased from the Lenni Lenape (Delaware) in 1664, it was settled in the early 18th century, and was part of Elizabeth until 1861.
