Whelan gave the students recordings of street interviews conducted in 1979 with Belfast residents to provide cultural and linguistic context. In effect, it is the repurposing of the text in a new linguistic context which generates the confusion over language dominance. Children, as they grow and sample their linguistic context, look to other children as partners in literary growth. |
