listening

Communication skill that involves hearing and interpreting received verbal information. Skilled listeners can pay attention to what others say and respond appropriately.

A good listener will concentrate on what the speaker is saying and show interest by making eye contact, by nodding or shaking the head, and by verbal encouragement.

Other listening skills include allowing others to make a point before interrupting, and valuing the opinions of others. For longer discussions it is also useful to summarize.
