In trench warfare, sentry post, usually slightly forward of the general trench line, where the occupant can listen for signs of enemy activity.

In World War I, where the trenches were relatively close, the sounds of digging, wiring etc. could be clearly heard at night and yielded useful information on the enemy's actions and intentions.
