living will

Written declaration of a person's wishes regarding medical treatment if in the future he or she should become too ill to communicate. It is in effect an advance refusal of heroic interventions to prolong a life that the patient would consider no longer tolerable. It enables patients whose condition is terminal to die with dignity.
