loam

Type of fertile soil, a mixture of sand, silt, clay, and organic material. It is porous, which allows for good air circulation and retention of moisture.

Most soils underlying the vineyards in the Sunnyslope area are silty to sandy loams where silt percentages range from 58% to 67% in the upper horizons (USDA, 1972).
That scenario held true in both corn following beans and corn-on-corn fields, spanning a range of soil types from light loams to heavy clay loams.
Soil types vary from deep sands over clay at the higher reaches of the ranch to alluvial loams at the lower elevations along old watercourses, with various clays and clay loams ranging in between.
