The loquat is a small, evergreen tree or shrub belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is native to China and Japan and is also known as the Japanese medlar. It is widely cultivated both as a decorative tree and for its edible, plumlike, yellowish fruits. The fruit is especially good for preserving.
