antihistamineAny substance that counteracts the effects of histamine. Antihistamines may occur naturally or they may be synthesized. H1 antihistamines are used to relieve allergies, alleviating symptoms such as runny nose, itching, swelling, or asthma. | Because over-the-counter antihistamines are well known to cause fatigue, these medications were excluded from this analysis (this study was conducted before loratadine became available as an over-the-counter preparation, and therefore use of this drug was included in the analysis). Now, the Canadian team has done the same type of experiment with five common antihistamines: loratadine (Claritin), astemizole (Hismanal), hydroxyzine (Atarax), doxylamine (Unisom and Nyquil), and cetirizine (Reactine). CRx-197 is a selective cytokine modulator containing low concentrations of the allergy drug loratadine and the anti-depressant nortriptyline, neither of which is indicated for the treatment of dermatitis on its own but which have been shown to act synergistically in preclinical models of inflammation. |
