When the PLE test is conducted, lumbar spinal extension is strong, leading to tension in the anterior longitudinal ligament or the fibrous ring of the intervertebral disk and relaxation in the zygapophyseal capsule, to which surrounding mechanoreceptors or nociceptors react strongly and induce lumbar pain. Though none of the 98 participants in this study currently suffered pain or had a history of serious lumbar pain, disk abnormalities showed up in lumbar scans of all but 36 percent, Jensen's team reports in the July 14 NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE. The patent application represents a potential therapeutic breakthrough for patients worldwide who suffer from chronic lumbar pain and related lower back disorders caused by disc degeneration. |
