Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.04 sec. |
lymph nodesSmall masses of lymphatic tissue in the body that occur at various points along the major lymphatic vessels. Tonsils and adenoids are large lymph nodes. As the lymph passes through them it is filtered, and bacteria and other micro-organisms are engulfed by cells known as macrophages. Lymph nodes are sometimes mistakenly called lymph ‘glands’, and the term ‘swollen glands’ refers to swelling of the lymph nodes caused by infection. How to thank TFD for its existence? Histology identified a normal thyroid gland, but a papillary carcinoma in one of the excised lymph nodes was consistent with a metastasis. Once T cells and other immune cells have become fully activated (which usually takes place while the cells are in one of the body's lymph nodes), they use certain molecules on their surface to control their movement out of lymph nodes and into the blood stream. Diagnostic techniques for Bartonella-related infections include culture of the pathogen (4,5), detection of organisms in lymph nodes by immunofluorescence (6), molecular techniques including PCR amplification of Bartonella spp. |
