When a cell has sufficient lysine, the amino acid binds to the riboswitch, triggering a structural change that blocks manufacture of the first enzyme in lysine production. A single amino acid substitution at position 627 of the PB2 gene (glutamic acid [E] to lysine [K]) was observed in KU-08 and had previously been observed in human, tiger, and cat isolates from Thailand as well as the viruses from China (Qinghai). Mavera, a high-value corn that includes lysine for animal feed, will be launched in Iowa and Illinois in 2008. |
