magic numbers

In atomic physics certain numbers of neutrons or protons (2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, 126) in the nuclei of elements of outstanding stability, such as lead and helium.

Such stability is the result of neutrons and protons being arranged in completed ‘layers’ or ‘shells’.
