magic opera

    0.01 sec.

magic opera

A species of opera not unlike the English pantomime, popular particularly on the Viennese stage at the end of the 18th and opening of the 19th centuries, where it was called Zauberoper. It consisted of dialogue and musical numbers, had a fairy-tale subject with incidents of low comedy, and contained numerous scenic effects. The outstanding example is Mozart's Zauberflöte; others are Müller's Zauberzither, Wranitzky's Oberon, Süssmayr's Spiegel von Arkadien, and Schubert's Zauberharfe.
