magnet school

School that specializes in a particular area of the curriculum; for example, science, sport, or the arts. Magnet schools were established in the USA from 1954 in some inner cities, with the aim of becoming centres of excellence in their special field.

Critics say that magnet schools attract talented pupils and staff away from equally deserving schools in the surrounding neighbourhood.
