magnetiteBlack, strongly magnetic opaque mineral, Fe3O4, of the spinel group, an important ore of iron. Widely distributed, magnetite is found in nearly all igneous and metamorphic rocks. Some deposits, called lodestone, are permanently magnetized. Lodestone has been used as a compass since the first millennium BC. Today the orientations of magnetite grains in rocks are used in the study of the Earth's magnetic field (see palaeomagnetism). How to thank TFD for its existence?
