Cathay

Name by which China was commonly known in Europe during the Middle Ages. The name was introduced by the Venetian traveller Marco Polo and derived from the Persian Khitai or Khitan, the earliest Mongolian tribe known to have conquered northern China.

The Russians still call China ‘Kitai’.
