mangabey

Any of a group of tropical African monkeys. The four species have long tails that can be used for support, although they are not fully prehensile (functional as additional limbs). They feed on shoots, leaves, fruit, and some animal food. (Genus Cercocebus.)

It could be a mutated virus that took genes from SIV strains from red-capped mangabeys, guenons and other monkeys, according to this idea.
We're on the west coast of Africa, home to a wealth of wildlife, including the littleknown red-capped mangabey monkeys.
They are based in Gabon in Africa, looking for the rare red-capped mangabey monkey, and are living in a specially-constructed high hide to spot the beasts.
