manitou

Presiding or protecting spirit in the religious beliefs of several American Indian peoples of the Algonquian linguistic group. Each person has a manitou, which is almost always connected with an animal chosen by the individual as the object of special veneration. The idea of a supreme being, or Great Manitou, also existed.
