manumission
| In medieval England, the act of freeing a villein or serf from his or her bondage. The process took place in a county court and freedom could either be bought or granted as a reward for services rendered. The term was used in the USA when slaves were freed. |
| In Roman times, slaves could become freedmen or freedwomen by being granted manumission by their owner, who let the slave go (manu misit). |
