manumission

In medieval England, the act of freeing a villein or serf from his or her bondage. The process took place in a county court and freedom could either be bought or granted as a reward for services rendered. The term was used in the USA when slaves were freed.

In Roman times, slaves could become freedmen or freedwomen by being granted manumission by their owner, who let the slave go (manu misit).
