Wild marjoram is a perennial growing up to 70 cm/2 ft 4 in high. When grown in warmer countries it has a stronger flavour, and is dried and sold as the herb oregano. Sweet marjoram is also a popular herb.

Aromatic herb belonging to the mint family. Wild marjoram (O. vulgare) is found in both Europe and Asia and has become naturalized in the Americas; the sweet marjoram (O. majorana) used in cooking is widely cultivated. (Genus Origanum or Marjorana, family Labiatae.)
