marl

Crumbling sedimentary rock, sometimes called clayey limestone, including various types of calcareous clays and fine-grained limestones. Marls are often laid down in freshwater lakes and are usually soft, earthy, and of a white, grey, or brownish colour. They are used in cement-making and as fertilizer.

I have no particular affiliation to the Tory Party or to David Cameron, but if Mrs Marling is referring to the state the country was in, pre-New Labour, then I for one would say - bring it on
She will no doubt draw comparisons with contemporaries such as Laura Marling but, for me, Alessi has more in common with Joanna Newsom and Kate Bush.
