Mascara

Town in the Mascara department of Algeria, 80 km/50 mi southeast of Oran; population (1987) 64,700. It trades in cereals, wine, and oil, and manufactures rugs and agricultural machinery.

Mascara was built on the site of a Roman settlement and developed as a garrison town. The former headquarters of the Algerian nationalist Abd-al-Kader, it was destroyed by the French in 1835, and was occupied by them in 1841.
