measlesAcute virus disease spread by airborne infection. Symptoms are fever, severe catarrh, small spots inside the mouth, and a raised, blotchy red rash appearing for about a week after two weeks' incubation. Prevention is by vaccination. In 2003, 530,000 children died of measles worldwide. In industrialized countries measles is not usually a serious disease, but serious complications may develop, so most developed countries have a vaccination programme. Measles kills approximately one in 5,000 children who develop the disease in developed countries. It also has a one in 1,000 risk of causing encephalitis, which leaves half of those children who develop it brain-damaged.

He said, from the first, it was a very good sortwhich was our great comfort; but the measles are a dreadful complaint. "Mumps one pound, that is what I have put down, but I daresay it will be more like thirty shillings -- don't speak -- measles one five, German measles half a guinea, makes two fifteen six -- don't waggle your finger -- whooping-cough, say fifteen shillings" -- and so on it went, and it added up differently each time; but at last Wendy just got through, with mumps reduced to twelve six, and the two kinds of measles treated as one. He had had all the diseases that babies are heir to, in quick succession, scarlet fever, mumps, and whooping cough in the first year, and now he was down with the measles. |
