megalithic religions

The beliefs of the cultures that raised the megalithic monuments such as Stonehenge, the stone circles found across Ireland and Scotland, and the great sacred sites such as Avebury in England. Probably the megalithic monuments were related to the movement of the Sun and acted as centres of calculation for the seasons of the year. There are approximately 50,000 megalithic monuments across Europe; they were clearly focal points for considerable numbers of communities and may have had a social as well as specifically religious function.
