Megalopolis

Ancient city in Arcadia. Megalopolis was founded on the advice of the Theban general Epaminondas after his heavy defeat of the Spartans at the Battle of Leuctra 371 BC. The inhabitants of 38 villages populated it (hence the modern use of the term ‘megalopolis’ to describe an amalgamation of urban areas) and it became one of the chief cities of the Achaean League.

Megalopolis was situated in the district Maenalia, near the frontier with Messenia, on the River Helisson, which flowed through the city.

Philopoemen, a general of the Achaean League, and the historian Polybius were born in Megalopolis.
