membranophone

One of the four main classes of musical instrument used in the original Sachs-Hornbostel system, the others being idiophone, aerophone, and chordophone. In instruments which are membranophones, the sound emanates from the vibration of a tight membrane such as the skin on a side drum. Included in this class of instruments are many percussion instruments of the drum type.
