Menton

Resort in the département of Alpes-Maritimes on the eastern end of the French Riviera 21 km/13 mi northeast of Nice, close to the Italian frontier; population (1990) 29,500, Menton-Monaco agglomeration 56,660. The winter climate is mild; fruit and flowers are grown here and it is popular as a holiday resort. In the 19th century it became popular with the English, who were the first to use it as a resort. Queen Victoria visited it in 1882.

It belonged to the princes of Monaco from the 14th century until 1848. After a brief period of independence from 1848–60, the citizens voted to merge with France after a plebiscite.
