Mesquite

City in Dallas County, northeastern Texas; population (1990) 101,500. Mesquite lies just east of Dallas, on Route 635, the city's ring road.

Mesquite was established in 1872 by the Texas & Pacific Railroad. Until the 1950s, it was a small agricultural community, but then developed as a residential and industrial suburb. Its manufactures include tools, bricks, tiles, pharmaceuticals, plastics, telecommunications equipment, and paper products. It is also a warehousing and distribution centre. Eastfield College (founded 1970) is situated here. The city is the regional headquarters of several major utilities companies, and draws visitors to rodeos, ballooning festivals, and other events.
