meta-tags

In Web pages, tags used to document the page and/or provide information that can be used by search engines to classify or index the page, not to control the display of information. Some Web programmers use meta-tags to try to cheat search engines - for example by repeating words frequently, or by using popular search words that have no relevance to the page - while search engine programmers make considerable efforts to negate this misuse. The battle is unseen by most Web users, who rarely use the browser's view source menu item to read meta-tags.
