methanal

Gas at ordinary temperatures, condensing to a liquid at −21°C/−5.8°F. It has a powerful, penetrating smell. Dissolved in water, it is used as a biological preservative. It is used in the manufacture of plastics, dyes, foam (for example, urea-formaldehyde foam, used in insulation), and in medicine. It is the simplest example of an aldehyde.
