methylated spiritAlcohol that has been rendered undrinkable, and is used for industrial purposes, as a fuel for spirit burners or a solvent. Its consumption can lead to blindness and eventually death. One of the poisonous substances in it is methanol, or methyl alcohol, and this gives it its name.
