methylated spirit

Alcohol that has been rendered undrinkable, and is used for industrial purposes, as a fuel for spirit burners or a solvent.

Its consumption can lead to blindness and eventually death. One of the poisonous substances in it is methanol, or methyl alcohol, and this gives it its name. (The ‘alcohol’ of alcoholic drinks is ethanol.)
