Metropolis

City and seat of Massac County, in the far south of Illinois; population (1990) 6,700. Metropolis is located on the Ohio River, 11 km/7 mi northwest of Paducah, Kentucky.

The original Fort Massac, built by the French in 1757, is now in a state park covering 6 sq km/2.3 sq mi. A settlement established nearby in 1796 and Metropolis City (founded 1839) combined to form the modern city, which is a centre for agricultural products and timber. In recognition of the fact that the city in the Superman comic books is called ‘Metropolis’, a statue of the superhero has been erected here, and a Superman Festival is held every year in June.

Beware my Laura (she would often say) Beware of the insipid Vanities and idle Dissipations of the Metropolis of England; Beware of the unmeaning Luxuries of Bath and of the stinking fish of Southampton.
The metropolis of Great Britain is, in certain respects, like no other metropolis on the face of the earth.
Thee, whom Maeonia educated, whom Mantua charmed, and who, on that fair hill which overlooks the proud metropolis of Britain, sat'st, with thy Milton, sweetly tuning the heroic lyre; fill my ravished fancy with the hopes of charming ages yet to come.
