electrodeAny terminal by which an electric current passes in or out of a conducting substance; for example, the anode or cathode in an electrolytic cell. The anode is the positive electrode and the cathode is the negative electrode. The terminals that emit and collect the flow of electrons in thermionic valves (electron tubes) are also called electrodes: for example, cathodes, plates (anodes), and grids.
