midwifery

Assistance of women in childbirth. Traditionally, it was undertaken by experienced specialists; in modern medical training it is a nursing speciality for practitioners called midwives. (See also obstetrics.)

The English physician William Harvey's 1653 work on generation contained an influential chapter on labour. Dr Peter Chamberlen II (1560–1631) made an important contribution to midwifery, particularly with his development of the first midwifery forceps.
