City with more than 1 million inhabitants. In 1985 there were 273 millionaire cities in the world, compared with just two in 1850. Most of these are now found in developing countries, whereas before 1970 most were in industrialized countries.

The first city to reach a population of 1 million was Edo (Tokyo) about 1800. At that time the largest cities in Europe were London, Paris, and Naples, which each had a population of about 500,000
