Minas

Town in southeastern Uruguay, capital of the department of Lavalleja, 100 km/62 mi northeast of Montevideo; population (1996) 34,661. Minas is one of the most picturesque towns in the country. The surrounding densely forested hills supply high-quality granite and marble. Minas was the birthplace of Uruguay's national hero Juan Antonio Lavalleja.
