mind mapping| Method for relating thought processes graphically. Mind mapping is a technique developed in the 1960s by US academic Tony Buzan, following his research into note-taking techniques of students. The technique involves harnessing words, images, numbers, colours, and spatial awareness to represent thoughts. Mind maps resemble unstructured, brightly coloured flow diagrams with pictures. |
| Guiding principles to creating a mind map include: start in the centre of the sheet of paper with at least three colours; use images, symbols, codes, and dimensions throughout; each word or image must be alone and sitting on its own line; lines must be connected starting as thick lines at the centre and becoming thinner as they radiate outwards; and use emphasis and show associations. A mind map can be used to give an overview of a large subject, to enable route planning of concepts, and to promote creative thinking by highlighting new creative pathways. |
