Collection of verse by various authors, particularly of shorter poems such as epigrams. The earliest known of these is the Greek Anthology, which includes a shorter collection by Meleager, known as the Garland.

The verse collected together in a highly successful miscellany by many authors, The Paradise of Dainty Devices, first printed in 1576 and reprinted nine times in the Elizabethan period, illustrates many of the characteristics of the desired speaking voice of the mid-century miscellanists.
